Volume 2 contains stories, essays, memoirs and dialogues about art, imagination & the erotic life. In this Scheherazadian story cycle, a young man writes a series of erotic tales, and his bookish friend Lisa offers light-hearted critiques of them. Some stories feel like erotic meditations or random erotic moments in a young man’s life. Others start with far-fetched (but deliciously erotic) premises and explore them in realistic ways. Other stories show characters haunted by erotic obsessions or searching for beauty in unlikely places.

Stories in Volume 2 are somewhat darker & more intense than those in Volume 1. A woman is brought to a Barcelona hotel with the opportunity to act out an erotic fantasy. A middle-aged man remembers past encounters with women which almost led to seduction. A husband and wife pick imaginary lovers at an outdoor festival. A brainy student and her boyfriend go to a party and learn about the sex lives of their friends. A man searches for erotic companionship in a virtual world called Supersex 3000. A man has the opportunity to seduce a mysterious woman, but can never know what she actually looks like.

As a bonus, this ebook contains sexy illustrations and 2 erotic essays (“Notes on Cafe Flesh and “Important Questions about Erotica”).

Reviews & Feedback

Jane’s Guide said that “these stories will be most popular with those who enjoy literary titillation served up with intellectual debate.” Another reviewer described the story collection as “exquisite, thoughtful vignettes that individually by turns inspire reflection, evoke startled recognition and collectively offer considerable insight into the tragicomedy that is the constant human search for connection.”

The stories and essays contained within may tickle the libido at times, but it’s the mind they spike. Through his unnamed narrator and character Lisa, Hapax Legomenon explores and debates the nature of erotica, its value as an art form, and whether it should even exist at all. Some of the stories are light and others tragically dark. Some a tightly contained bundle and others open-ended and up for interpretation. Then there are the interludes that are tied to the stories that add another layer to the narrative, and a whole section of first time/last time flash fiction. Honestly, there’s a lot going on in this book … I’ll just sum things up by saying I enjoyed it, it made me think, and I see myself revisiting a number of the stories after they’ve had time to roll around in my head for awhile. “(A Goodreads Reviewer about EXISTENTIAL SMUT 1)

Reader Responses to Existential Smut 2

  • The “Statue” story was amazing. I skipped lunch to read it.
  • I like “The Statue” a lot. Reminds me of Condillac‘s  Treatise on the Senses.
  • “Psyche’s Revenge” is a a beautiful story, highlighting maybe what romance should be. I’m still curious as to why Natalie wanted what she wanted. Was she looking for hope? Does she think she’s not good enough for a ‘normal’ guy? …. In any case, I like the way the story works in the dark, and leaves the reader with unanswered questions.
  • “Important Questions about Erotica” is a very perceptive analysis of the erotic life. I find, at age 82, that I am as interested in my sexuality as I was at 20. However, I no longer have the wind to support my weight on elbows and knees and make the necessary motions. And Cialis helps, but not enough. Thank you. I have enjoyed your writing.
