Mini-Notions #11: Welcome to Bluesky

Previous and Next (View All)

In addition to blogging, I run several social media accounts under my own name. Over time I have wanted to establish a social media presence for my erotica pseudonym. Recently I decided to join Bluesky and post occasionally there. (Here’s my account). A few years ago I have also created accounts on Mastodon and Facebook. I’m both excited and ambivalent about creating YAUSMA (Yet Another Useless Social Media Account).

I don’t post much about politics or social events on my social media accounts anyway, but I’d like an outlet where I occasionally post things about erotic fiction and sexuality. Specifically I’d like to feature other authors and thinkers with cool insights into sexuality and human desire. Also I’d like to reference or interact with other bluesky members while still operating under my pseudonym.

I’m currently working on two things of moderate complexity: 1)my Lusty Bibliophile newsletter, 2)an annual book list of sexually explicit fiction. I probably want to promote these two things when they’re ready, but in the meantime, I have lots of recommendations and short things to share.

These social media accounts (like my blog) are dedicated first and foremost to the subjects of 1)sexually explicit fiction and 2)thought pieces about sexuality. The URL’s I drop in them aren’t usually NSFW — but occasionally they have suggestive art or photography or explicit writing. I’m torn about using content labels and warnings. Generally, unless the URL is aggressively NSFW, I will avoid using content warnings.

The other challenge is trying to balance separate but equal social media accounts. I’d prefer having only this blog and one social media account to worry about, but alas, it seems that the popularity of various platforms is always in flux, so I must join these things out of obligation and hope that some readers find them useful. I don’t mind so much the smaller platforms, but some corporations that run them do so pretty ruthlessly (I’m looking at you FB and IG! — and don’t get me started about TikTok!)

The flip side is that it’s impossible to check all social media every single f***ing day. At best I check them once a week or month, maybe even less frequently. But I plan to interact with Bluesky slightly more often than with other platforms.

I should stress that this is not my primary bluesky account, and also it is not loaded on my mobile devices. I’m running this bluesky only on my laptop — that can limit somewhat the frequency of my postings. Only time will tell whether presence on this platform will be meaningful or interesting.
